Wholesome Banana Bread

My new favourite banana bread recipe that I now make every week! Its packed full of healthy fats, protein & fibre, which makes it a perfectly substantial breakfast & even better when topped with almond butter & fresh banana slices.

I've finally got my act together & I'm sharing one of my most loved recipes. As I write this it is the perfect day for enjoying banana bread too. An early morning storm, lots of rain on the roof & just a glimmer of sunlight. I've made myself a cuppa & headed back under my doona to write this.

Perfect on its own but also delicious with toppings like almond butter, extra banana, cacao nibs & honey. Just to make it a little more deluxe!

Wholesome banana bread

Makes 1 large loaf


200 g (2 cups) almond meal

30 g (1/4 cup) buckwheat flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp cinnamon

4 ripe bananas, approx 300g mashed

3 eggs

60 mL macadamia oil (grapeseed or extra virgin olive oil work well too)

60 mL honey

1 tsp vanilla bean paste

1 tsp apple cider vinegar

2 tbs chia seeds

optional extras

1/3 cup chopped walnuts

1/4 cup chopped dark chocolate

1 tsp chai spices

1/4 cup chopped dates

1 banana (extra) sliced lengthways, for the top

Cinnamon & coconut sugar, for the top

Rolled oats or pumpkin seeds, for the top


  1. Preheat the oven to 170 degrees (fan forced). Line a loaf tin with baking paper.

  2. Whisk the eggs in a large jug then add the remaining wet ingredients. Set aside.

  3. Combine all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl with a whisk to ensure no lumps.

  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry & gently fold together.

  5. Add in any of the optional extras if using (I love the walnuts!).

  6. Pour the batter into the lined loaf tin, add toppings, & bake in the preheated oven for 45 - 50 minutes. The banana bread should be golden brown & a skewer should come out clean when finished.

  7. Cool slightly before slicing & enjoying!
